How to Find New MC Numbers and Newly Authorized Carriers

Updated October 2026 · AuthorityAlerts

Every day FMCSA grants a few hundred new operating authorities and receives a few hundred more applications. If you sell to trucking — insurance, factoring, dispatch, ELDs, compliance — those rows are your freshest possible prospects. Here are the four real ways to find them, from free-and-manual to fully automated.

1. FMCSA's lookup tools (free, one at a time)

SAFER's Company Snapshot and the Licensing & Insurance (L&I) site will tell you everything about a carrier you already know about — search by name, USDOT or MC number and read its authority and insurance history. What they won't do is answer "who got authority in Georgia yesterday?" There is no date-range list view. These tools are for verifying a lead, not generating one.

2. The FMCSA Register (free, daily, unfiltered)

FMCSA publishes a daily register of authority decisions. It's authoritative and free, but it's a raw nationwide document: no state filtering, no fleet size, no contact details, no history of who you've already called. Teams that rely on it end up copying rows into spreadsheets by hand every morning — workable for a solo agent's single state, painful beyond that.

3. The public datasets (free, complete, engineering required)

Everything lives in FMCSA's open datasets on data.transportation.gov: the carrier census, authority histories and insurance histories. This is the ground truth — hundreds of thousands of rows, reloaded every morning. To turn it into a call list you need to ingest the daily reloads, join authority events to census records for names, locations, fleet size and contacts, detect filing-agent contacts so you don't dial registration services, and de-duplicate against yesterday. It's a real data pipeline — here's exactly how ours works — and if you have engineering time, you can absolutely build one.

4. An alert service (the same data, delivered)

The buy-side option: a service runs the pipeline and sends you the filtered result. Evaluate any provider — us included — on five questions: Is the source actually FMCSA's daily data, or a resold list? How fresh is "new" (same-morning matters; week-old new authorities are already called)? Are owner contacts separated from filing-agent contacts? Can you filter by state, fleet and cargo? And does it track who you've contacted so lists stay clean? AuthorityAlerts is our answer to those questions: digests by 10:30 AM ET, every stage from application to insurance cancellation, owner contacts flagged, from $79/month.

Which method fits you

One state, a few calls a week: the daily register plus SAFER verification costs nothing but time. A sales team with quotas: either build the pipeline (option 3) or buy it (option 4) — the math is engineering hours against a subscription. Either way, see what a day's data looks like first: the live stats pages show every state's counts, and the free sample sends you yesterday's actual carriers, no signup.
